She frowned when she didn't find anything out of the ordinary either and turned to look at the two men. "Are you sure this is the right place?" Her question was non-judgmental.

"No, but the clue feels..." Quentin says as he eyes it and then he slowly starts to hold up the pieces laying them next to each other. His young companions would likely realize it the same moment he did. All of the clues were part of a greater torn piece of paper and now all that was left was to assemble the puzzle!

Gareth watched Quentin look at the pieces of paper, but he didn't see what good that would do to solve their issue. "There are other whalebone arches in the area," he told Claire, but just then, he saw Quentin beginning to put the pieces next to each other, and he realized some of the edges matched. He picked up a piece and placed it next to a matching piece.

"Oh," she said, and then frowned when she saw what Quentin was doing... and then Mister Scott joined in. Naturally she had to put a piece there too. She then stepped back and looked at this puzzle with a pensive look on her face.

Now that it was altogether the well-used parchment with the clues resolves into something coherent. It was a faded map, the words and clues written over it but it was still visible underneath the new ink. It appeared to be of Whitby village, a new marking showing where the whale jaw arch was and then a line leading to where they needed to go next which was down the cliff and in land a bit.

"My word."

Quentin murmurs as he takes it all in.

Gareth rose, frowned down at the map and sighed audibly. "Why the hell did this knob lead us to the arch in the first place, then?" he said irritated, gesturing at the map, and forgetting his politer manners for a moment.

"That is a good question," she said in agreement with his sentiments... to a point. She would not have worded it so harshly, but that was just her. "Maybe whoever is behind this wants to keep it challenging. Perhaps only the worthy makes it to the end to get the treasure." She gave a shrug.

"Well Mister Scott, I assume it led us to the arch since it appears to be the primary point of reference and scale for the map. You'll note that the locations we visited are on here as well so I can get a fairly accurate bearing. The man who made the map was, among other things, the ship's pilot so I am not surprised by this." Which certainly helped give Quentin, a seasoned explorer and navigator, a sense of the topography and scale of the map, since that was lacking. Looking over to Claire he nods. "That is mostly correct, as I understand it his intent was to pass this down to his descendants and that their local knowledge would lead them to the treasure while others would struggle to parse it. However, his children thought he was full of it and sold the map so that didn't work out."

Gareth listened sulkily when it turned out there was a perfectly good explanation that he himself hadn't thought of. "I guess that makes sense," he muttered, and he folded his arms and stared out across town while he listened to Quentin addressing Claire. A smirk appeared on his face. Oh man, those children would surely feel like right nerks once they found out what treasure they had lost. Gareth decided that after this adventure, he'd go looking for the descendants, rub it in, and write an article about it. There was nothing his audience loved more than reading about people having better fortune than themselves - and having it taken away from them.

If she had known what a slimeball the reporter was, she would have gone back to her room for sure. She was blissfully unaware of his intentions, thankfully, or she probably would have called him out. Since that was neither here nor there, she stood pensively as Quentin spoke. She was finally too distracted by the map to admire the bigger man, continuing to look down upon the object in question while tapping a finger on her forearm. "That makes sense," she said absently.
