I take thee - Iris Carpenter - 07-15-2023

Gretna Greene, Scotland

Iris was nervous as she peered at herself in the mirror provided to her by the inn. While he was out making whatever last preparations that needed to be made, a chapel and priest and such, she was just dressed in her elegant gown. It wasn't white, she did not need a white gown this time since this would be the second time she'd walked down the aisle. The gown she wore was a deep blue color that made her features pop.

She'd had help from one of the maids after using the last of the pay she had received from wet-nursing, her bright locks arranged in an elegant coif and curls dangling on either side of her face. She pressed her hand to her belly and took a deep breath before she headed down to the common room to get some tea in order to calm her nerves.

Some admiring glances were cast in her direction, for she was a pretty picture to behold. She ignored them for the most part, focused on the fact that she was about to become Jamie's wife any time now.

Jamie like most of his family including his cousins Murtagh and Alasdair were proud of one thing. Their heritage and on a wedding day that meant one thing........the clan kilt. Like his cousins, Jamie owned his own. He squared himself away

He made his way to the alter gaining glances by everyone around him. Kilts always raised an interest and it had not been so long ago that people were allowed to wear them outwith the army once more. (A change that was made after culloden over 150 years before outlawing kilts in Scotland unless worn by the army). He walked to the alter and stood awaiting his bride

Someone came and got her... It was the innkeeper, who said he would serve as a witness with his wife after having heard their story. And so she was soon escorted into the church by the older gentleman and walked down the aisle, only to be stopped in front of her bridegroom. She was feeling a knot of fear for a second marriage... but Jamie loved her, he would never... do the things that had been done before to her, he just wasn't that kind of a man. He was a good man.

She stopped before him and as instructed, gave him her hand to hold even as she could barely hear anything over focusing on her own breathing.

Jamie closed his eyes as he stood and waited at the alter, he knew that she had been married and widowed before but now they were together and two were about to become three, and this was everything he wanted and more. he slowed his breathing down and waited. He was ready, ready to commit. ready to give every single part of him to her and the child.

he heard her footsteps as she walked up the cobbled floor and felt her hand slide in his. he gave her as gentle squeeze and turned to speak "you ready to do this?"

Her eyes settled on him. She felt faint, fear gripping at her heart. His words echoed through her mind and she focused on his kind face. Could she do this again? Could she put herself in the hands of another? And people would probably judge her for moving with haste, she realized, looking for the world like she would flee the church. Somewhere inside of her, she found the strength to push her worries aside. She wanted a life filled with happiness and the approval of others did not matter. She loved him. She squeezed his hand in response finally, after what seemed like a long time. While she stood there pale and hardly daring to breathe, she gazed at him with trust mingling with fear in her eyes. She was giving her fear to him.

Jamie smiled and squeezed her hand one more time. "I love you" he turned to face the registrar and spoke once more. "We are ready!" He looked forward and waited for them to begin

She didn't say it back, at least not in words. She was starting to tremble some as if cold, but her eyes stared into his even as the vows began. She fumbled through hers, stuttering the words out without even remembering them as they came out until a simple band was held up for her to take. She took it woodenly, almost dropping it. Breathe... she thought and started speaking louder and with more confidence. "With this ring, I thee wed," she murmured and nearly giggled.

Her eyes filled with tears as the quick ceremony went by and it was time for him to seal the deal with a kiss.

Jamie smiled and said his vows as she did. He placed the ring on her finger and smiled once more. His life had become perfect. The job. The career path he wanted and now a wife and child. This was one of the happiest moments of his life.

He listened to the registrar before the ceremony ended and it was the final moment. His lips met hers and for that precise moment. They were one

She was trying to breathe as the witnesses came forward as well to do what needed to be done... And then they were officially married. She gave a deep sigh and let it out when the pen was done scratching over the paper. He had to know, she thought, that this was one of the hardest moments she'd let happen in the wake of what she had gone through. Her heart pounded in her chest and she gently set the pen down. Her eyes lifted and met his, hers big and scared, but she was entrusting him with her life. Her sigh was deep again and she reached for his hand.

Jamie wanted this moment to last forever but he knew it wouldn't. He would be back on the beat shortly but he would enjoy his time away until then.

Deep down he was nervous but knew that this was the right decision. Iris had become a big part of his life. Almost as much as the police had become.

His eyes watched as she wrote on the marriage certificate. He smiled and from that moment they were one. His eyes met her and he gave her a smile. His hand found hers as she reached and gave her a slight reassuring squeeze
